Drugs and the mechanism of class
The oral Fexofenadine, "second generation" antihistamine, which is used to treat signs and symptoms of allergy, which, due to histamine. It is similar to other second-generation antihistamines loratadine (Claritin), cetirizine (Zyrtec) and azelastine (Astelin). Histamine is a chemical that is responsible for many of the signs and symptoms of allergic reactions, such as a tumor on the lining of the nose, sneezing, and itchy eyes. Histamine is released from histamine-storing cells (mast cells), and then gives the other cells, which have receptors for histamine. Deposits in the histamine receptors in a cell leads to the "action", the release of other chemicals that produce consequences that we associate with allergies, such as sneezing. Fexofenadine blocks of the same type for histamine receptors (receptors in H1), and thus prevents the activation of H1-receptor cells containing histamine. Unlike the first-generation antihistamines, fexofenadine and other second-generation antihistamines do not readily enter the brain from the blood, and therefore they cause less drowsiness. Fexofenadine was approved by the FDA in July 1995.
